The Sand Ceremony
This year I have 3 Sand Ceremonies booked.
Is the Sand Ceremony becoming more popular?
This is how I see it:
A Sand Ceremony represents the uniting of a family.
So, my first focus is on the fact that it is more common now to see children in a family before the marriage, myself included.
The couple pour their sands in and then the children add theirs, one at a time. Then lastly the couple pour theirs in over the top, to seal the deal. Thus, uniting a family as one. The formation of the sand is quite pretty, and this can be a lovely keepsake (I will mention storage further on). I might also like to mention that another nice idea is to involve the parents of the couple, why not, it is after all a joining of two families.
My next focus is on the evolution of weddings. Its fair to say weddings have moved from the stuffy serious affair to a beautiful, relaxed and more human occasion that is more about the couple and less about, dare I say it The Church (that’s a whole other blog). So, it has become very popular to have an inclusion that has meaning and a bonus keepsake afterwards.
Me, I think they are unique and meaningful. No two Sand Ceremonies are the same and no two have the same meaning, that’s magical.
Now storage, what do you want to display it in?? Well start googling and you will see that the main vessel for a Sand Ceremony is expensive. It seems like ‘This has a wedding use; we will bump up the price’. Feels like exploitation to me, but that is me venting. So, what do you do, you get creative.
There are some stylish shaped carafes out there, I even found a striking heart shaped one! I’ve also seen a mason jar decorated with hessian and lace that looked quite pretty.
Or if a shadow box is more to your liking, maybe you know a clever handyman that could build you one OR buy a shadow box picture frame and get to work on making that your keepsake. You can use anything that will hold sand, be sealable and give you the vision of the sand formation.
I have taken on the sand aspect of the ceremonies for my couples, and I love preparing them for their ceremonies, ribbons, name tags, whatever they want and soooo many colours.
Let me end by giving my two cents, for what it is worth.
Make sure you have equal amounts of sand for all and most importantly that they will all fit to the top. If there is a gap your sand will move around as the vessel moves and it will blend, your pattern is then lost. Also don’t forget it has to seal, you don’t want to spill that sucker!
